Vintage Fabric Photo Matting Tutorial

I love the sepia toned photos in the living room, but with just plain white mattings they looked a little dull. I decided to add some interest with pretty vintage fabrics that coordinated with the room. Here's how I did it...
Step 1- I purchased several photo mattings, (on sale at Hobby Lobby) and then chose my fabrics.
Step 2- I cut the fabric to the same height and width as the matting. On the interior, I cut out the center leaving about an inch of fabric on all sides.
Step 3- Cut a diagonal line to each corner.

Step 4- On the right side of the matting, I placed a line of glue near the outside edge (basic glue stick) and positioned the fabric lining up the edges.

Step 5- Flip the matting over and fold and secure the inside edges.

Step 6- Center your picture and place in the frame. That's it! A pretty easy way to brighten up a picture wall.

  1. I love this project and I love the pictures of Ubu. We just got home yesterday from the DC in Loveland, CO and had a great time. We went to Rio Rancho for Sunday the 5th then Fri & Sat in Loveland so we'd have an extra couple of days with my sis. We sure enjoyed the family, too.
I couldn't wait to get home, though and now I can try your project out on some pics I took of my new great nephew.

  4. The fabric matted photos look great. I like the blue next to the picture of Ubu.

I'm so sorry you lost Ubu. Dogs are so special, and that must be difficult after 14 years. Take care.

  8. Such a good idea...I am in the process of making a twin size quilt out of vintage sheets for my daughter, and this would be a great project to use with some of the extra fabric.

  9. You make it look so easy.
It looks fab. I have soooo many frames that could use a beautiful mat like that.
Of course I adore your fur baby in the pictures.

  13. I just bought the blue fabric in this picture today from the local Goodwill. It is in the washer as I type. Do you know anything about Crompton-Richmond Fabric. I bought a cute remnant today and have searched flickr and Etsy and Ebay and can't find out anything about it. Love love love your fabric shop. Just looked thru it and some of your flickr pictures.
